The
sturdy Swabian castle seems to afford protection and safety to the
evocative old part of Termoli. Here, built in the 13th
century, in a small square, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of Santa
Maria della Purificazione stands like a throne.

Moving now towards the inner part of the Molise and following the course
of the Trigno river, which forms a natural border between the Abruzzo
and Molise regions, we reach Canneto, in the countryside around Roccavivara.
The Romanesque church which the Benedictine monks built in the first
half of the 12th century close by the remains of a Roman
villa, partially unearthed and now open to visits, is set in the middle
of a park.

Trivento
- The crypt of S. Casto |
From Canneto, following the Trignina state road, we reach Trivento,
where at the top of the town centre we find the cathedral dedicated to
the Saints Nazaro, Celso and Vittore.
Founded in ancient times, it now preserves a very beautiful baptistery
of the 14th-15th century and the crypt dedicated
to the martyr San Casto.
We proceed towards Agnone, in the high part of the Molise. Here, still
in operation, we find the oldest Papal foundry, together with the
copper and ceramic works. Agnone however is also and above all famous
for its churches: Sant’Emidio (15th C.), San
Marco (12th-17th C.), Sant’Antonio Abate
(15th C.), San Francesco (15th-18th
C.).

Still in the upper Molise we can still admire the buildings of the
ancient Samnite Sanctuary of Pietrabbondante (14th-1st
C. B.C.) In the area the Italian-Greek temple and theatre hold notable
interest. After a short journey we reach the bottom of the valley.

- The
Samnite Sanctuary |
The cathedral located in the old part of Isernia,
where, objects
unearthed in a pre-historic encampment that dates back to 700.000 years
ago are on display in the mediaeval Convent of Santa Maria delle
Monache, was built on the remains of an imposing Roman temple. The
podium is clearly visible in the wall structure of the current building.
